Christian Veilleux and Leah Gram Triumph at the 40th Annual Nicklaus Junior Championship
The South Florida PGA Junior Tour competed in the 40th Annual Nicklaus Junior Championship, hosted at the Bear’s Club June 24-25, founded by the “Golden Bear” Jack Nicklaus himself.
This two-day, 36-hole event showcased 86 of South Florida's finest young golfers.
In round one, Gaitlin Albright of Stuart excelled, recording a tournament low of one-under 71 and taking an early lead in the Boys 13-18 division.
Trailing Albright by two strokes, Aiden Arce of Davie started Tuesday’s final round with zero bogeys and four birdies, narrowing the gap to card a4-under 32 on the front nine. Joining Arce in the comeback was Christian Veilleux of Jupiter and Andrew Tsar of Palm Beach Gardens, who matched Arce shot-for-shot.
As they approached the final hole, the potential for a playoff loomed. However, Arce's bogey cleared the path for Veilleux's victory, who birdied the last hole. Arce and Tsar finished tied for second place at even par. In the scorecard playoff, Tsar claimed the title.
Veilleux’s two-day total of 74-69–143 secured his first South Florida Junior major victory with a one-under finish, marking a memorable end to his time with the SFPGA Junior Tour.
“There’s no better way to close out my time with the SFPGA than at my last event at the Bear’s Club,” said Veilleux, who began his journey with the Junior Tour as a high school freshman and will attend Florida Atlantic University in the fall. His father, Eric Veilleux, PGA, serves as the Director of Golf at The Bear’s Club, making the victory extra special.
In the Girls 13-18 division, Leah Gram and Reese McMillan of Jupiter tied their opening rounds at four-over 76. Starting their final rounds in the featured group, the friends matched one another’s performance, making it an interesting battle for the title.
When asked about competing alongside her best friend, Gram said, “It feels really special, but sad at the same time because as much as I wanted to win, I wanted her to win too.”
As they approached the last hole with a playoff looming, McMillan joked, "We both agreed not to let this turn into a playoff."
Gram clinched the first-place title with a strong back nine score of 33, one stroke ahead of McMillan.
This marks Gram’s first major win with the SFPGA. At just 13, she is one of the youngest in her division. “It was so fun to win,” said Gram. “I’m proud of myself for succeeding on such a tough course.”
Thank you to Eric Veilleux, PGA, and the entire staff at the Bear’s Club for hosting a successful 40th Annual Nicklaus Junior Championship.
Congratulations to all the champions and runners-up on their outstanding performances.
