The South Florida PGA Callaway Medalist Tour kicked off its third major of the 2024 junior season this Monday at Stonebridge Country Club.
This two-day, 36-hole event saw 84 of South Florida's finest young golfers fighting for a chance to play at the National Junior PGA Championship, held at Congressional Country Club from July 30 to August 2. Players had to qualify in one of four events to earn their spot in this event. The top two finishers in both of the 13-18 divisions secured their tickets to Bethesda, Maryland.
In the final group of round two, the spotlight was on a standout trio: 13-year-old Bento Assis of Porto Alegre, Brazil (-2); high school sophomore Brooks Colton of Riviera Beach (-1); and junior Jack Ryan Donovan of Ave Maria (-2).
Arth Sinha of Ovieda started the final round three strokes back of the Boy’s 13-18 leaders. Sinha had an impressive Tuesday round carding zero bogeys and four birdies, paving his way to a solo lead position at three-under, 73-68–144, and punching his ticket to Maryland. When asked what helped him navigate the final round, Sinha shared, "The fairways were tight, but I had a lot of confidence in my driver.”
In the Girls' 13-18 division, Zoe Shamy from Jupiter shot a one-over 73, gaining a two-stroke lead over Sarasota's Jolie Pastorick and Naples' Alayna Friedt heading into the final round. Starting Tuesday's round two shots behind Shamy, Friedt surged to first place after carding a 39-35–74 in round two. Friedt credited her success to her mindset, emphasizing the importance of reminding herself to “never give up.”
The battle for the runner-up position led to a sudden-death playoff on hole number 10 between Jolie Pastorick and Staci Pla, both of whom finished the tournament at five-over. After sinking a 15-foot putt for birdie, Pla of West Palm Beach secured her spot as runner-up, joining Friedt in Maryland.
“I’ve been in a lot of playoffs lately, so I knew I had to win this one,” Pla remarked.
The Boys' 13-18 division also saw a thrilling playoff for the runner-up position between Jeremy Hsu and Matthew Marigliano. Hsu had an impressive second round, featuring one eagle and two birdies, propelling him into the playoff. After a tense four-hole showdown, Hsu from Port St. Lucie secured the final spot in the national championship.
Thank you to Jeff Hall, PGA, and the entire staff at Stonebridge Country Club for hosting another successful South Florida Junior PGA Championship.
Congratulations to all the champions and runners-up on their outstanding performances. Best of luck as you proudly represent the SFPGA at the National Championship next month!
