Thrilling Playoff and Exceptional Performances Highlight South Florida PGA Callaway Medalist Tour Event
The South Florida PGA Callaway Medalist Tour kicked off July with a thrilling two-day, 36-hole event at Normandy Shores Golf Course on July 1 and 2. Junior golfers across south Florida showcased their skills and competitive spirit, culminating in a memorable playoff and outstanding individual performances.
Despite rough weather and storms that challenged the players, two Coral Gables natives emerged victorious in their respective divisions. The boys' 13-18 division saw an especially dramatic finish, with five players heading into a playoff to determine the champion.
Nicholas Shortal clinched the victory with an impressive 36-hole score of 70-71-141. Shortal started round one on Monday by birding two holes on the back nine, finishing the day with an even par score.
Gavin Duffy, a Fort Lauderdale native, made three birdies during round two to secure his spot in a highly competitive playoff against four other Medalist Tour players. He claimed the second-place title after a tense three-hole playoff.
In the girls' 13-18 division, Fernanda Carrion secured her first win of the 2024 season by two shots. Carrion's outstanding performance included five birdies in the first round, leading to a total score of 69-78-147. Her strong start set the tone for her success over the two days.
Vanessa Georgescu, also from Fort Lauderdale, performed well, finishing in second place. Georgescu (75-74-149) maintained an even par score for the front nine in Tuesday's round while making three birdies throughout the day.
Congratulations to Nicholas Shortal and Fernanda Carrion for their exceptional performances this week!
A special thank you to John Oyler, PGA, and the Normandy Shores Golf Course staff for hosting a fantastic event.
The next Medalist Tour event will be held on July 17 and 18 at Hobe Sound Golf Club. We look forward to seeing more incredible talent and competitive play from our junior golfers.
