South Florida PGA Junior Tour member Angela Nip will compete at the National Drive, Chip and Putt Finals at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 3rd.
“It is like a once and a lifetime thing, it is like a dream come true, '' said Nip.
Founded in 2013, DCP is a joint initiative through the Masters Tournament, the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America to grow the game of golf by offering a free nationwide competition to junior golfers everywhere. The South Florida PGA administers 10 local qualifying events throughout the section.
Nip, a Junior Tour member since 2018, will be competing in the girls 14-15 division, the oldest available division.
For Nip, heading to Augusta National is a family affair. Older sister Gloria, competed in the National Finals in 2015 and 2018 with Angela supporting her every step of the way.
“It is super special, it is something I feel like for me and my sister, it makes us much closer,” said Nip. “I feel very lucky to have her with me.”
With the experience Gloria gained from her two trips to Augusta, she made sure to give Angela important advice on how to deal with the attention you receive during the event.
“Basically just to stay calm,” Nip explained. “She told me just to stay calm and everything is going to work out the way you want it to.”
With the competition day quickly approaching, Nip is taking her sister's advice. In addition to her calm composure the 14-year-old is not letting any nerves affect her.
“You don't need to deal with nerves, you just breathe and it just deals with itself, '' she said. “If you ignore it, it will go away.”
Nip made it to the National Finals by way of advancing through three qualifiers in the south Florida area, including the regional qualifier at the Bear’s Club. In that regional qualifier, Nip earned consistent scores, finishing in second in driving, tied for third in chipping and first in putting to advance by a total of 16 points.
Since qualifying for the National Finals, Nip has finished in the top-5 in each of the four SFPGA Medalist Tour events she has competed in during the 2022 season. This play has Nip sitting atop the Medalist Tour player of the year rankings.
Live coverage of the 2022 National Drive, Chip, and Putt Finals will air on Sunday, on Golf Channel from 8 A.M. to 1 P.M. ET. Good luck Angela!
