NAPLES (July 24, 2022) – When Cynthia Liu of Parkland played her first eight holes in 4-over par Sunday, she wasn’t thinking about winning the Patty Berg Junior Championship at Cypress Lake Golf Club.
“I wasn’t even sure if I was going to finish in the top five,” Liu said. “It had been a rough front nine.”
But she hit a 9-iron from 120 yards to 20 feet at the ninth and made the birdie to ignite a comeback. Liu was 3-under on her last 10 holes for a 1-over 73 and a one-shot victory over Gloria Nip of Port St. Lucie.
“That birdie at 9 gave me confidence, and I just calmed down and worried about my own game,” said Liu, a 17-year-old who will be a senior at Stoneman Douglas High. “It means a lot to win my first junior major and to honor Patty Berg."
T.J. Thompson of Coral Springs, also a senior at Douglas High, was the only boy to finish under par (1-under 215), with a final-round 77, to cruise to a six-shot victory over Michael Bevins of Fort Myers (71-221). Thompson, who won last year’s Nicklaus Junior Championship, fired a 67 Saturday to take a five-shot lead into the final round.
“I made a double (bogey) on the second hole, and it kind of got to me,” Thompson said. “After that I just started to play match play against the course: ‘a par-4, I make a birdie 3 and I’m one up.’ That settled me down.”
Bevins was the only player to break par Sunday, a 1-under 71. Tomy Jaunet (72-222) and Aiden Miller (73-222) of Palm Beach Gardens tied for third.
Nip was trying to win for the second consecutive week after she captured the Brendan Cunningham Junior Open. Nip (75) led for most of the Patty Berg, but finished with a pair of bogeys.
Jordan Knox (73-225) of Fort Myers was third, followed by Erin Marcelino (77-226) of Plantation and Madison Moman (75-227) of Palm Beach Gardens
