Palm Beach Gardens, FL - Tristan Rhodenizer and Valentina Marie Guertin claim the 2023 Labor Day Classic Championship today at PGA National Resort on the Champion course.
PGA National served as the host facility of the 3-day, 54-hole major with the first two rounds being played on the Champion and Fazio Courses and the final round being played on the Champion Course. Following round two, the 156 player field was cut to the low 63 boys and girls.
Rhodenizer of Palm Beach Gardens managed three consecutive under-par rounds 69-68-71–208 (-8) to win the title by three shots over Jake Valentine of Palm Beach Gardens.
Rhodenizer credited his putter for allowing him to play so consistently throughout the week. “I made a lot of putts the first two days,” he said. “It cooled off on the back nine today, but was luckily able to keep it together.”
Rhodenizer matched the tournament low round of 68 in round two, giving him a three shot cushion going into the final round.
“Jake played really well, 4-under is not easy in this wind, " Rhodenizer explained. “I just tried to keep hitting fairways and greens, you can’t really make a lot of mistakes out here even with a three shot lead.”
Guertin, the Boynton Beach native, completed a wire-to-wire victory finishing at 2-over 71-71-76–218. Currently fifth in the player of the year standings, Guertin has excelled in the majors this year, finishing second in the Patty Berg, third in the Brendan Cunningham, eighth in the Junior Cup and eleventh in the Junior PGA Championship.
“It has been a struggle because I have been close but haven't been able to close out a tournament,” Guertin said. “But this tournament I was able to finish and it feels really good.”
With the win, Rhodenizer and Guertin will receive four AJGA stars and the top 10% will receive one.
The Labor Day Classic is the seventh of eight junior majors and last three day event of the 2023 South Florida PGA Junior Tour Season.
Thank you to PGA Club Manager, Jane Broderick, PGA and Tournament Director, Michael Williams and the entire team at PGA National for hosting.
