NAPLES (July 15, 2022) – Ryan Miller of Naples and Gloria Nip of Port St. Lucie would have made Brendan Cunningham proud Friday by winning the South Florida PGA junior championship named after him.
Miller celebrated his 17th birthday by winning the Brendan Cunningham Junior Open’s Boys 13-18 title by four shots at 6-under 138. Miller shot rounds of 70 and 68 at Hammock Bay and won when Friday’s third round had to be canceled because of thunderstorms. He still led by four over Graham Boone of Naples when play was stopped.
“It was a big deal to play in Mr. Cunningham’s tournament because I knew him for four years,” said Miller, a junior at Gulf Coast High School. “He was a super nice guy to meet (as a starter) on the first tee and he always wanted us to go out there with the mindset of having fun.”
Nip won the Girls 13-18 title by a shot over Madison Moman of Palm Beach Gardens. Nip shot 70-71, just edging Moman (71-71).
“I wore a green shirt because I knew that was (Cunningham’s) favorite color,” said the 16-year-old Nip, who finished runner-up in the 2018 National Drive Chip & Putt finals. “I’m excited to win this tournament because I was under par in all three of my rounds (she was 1-under when play was stopped).”
Miller took a four-shot lead with an opening 70 and kept that advantage with a 68 in the second round (that was matched by Boone). Miller was still comfortably ahead when the horn sounded.
“It feels amazing to win my first event,” Miller said. “It’s awesome to shoot 6-under. I’ve never done that in a tournament. I kept the ball in play, and I was making everything.”
Nip has won more tournaments than she can count. She didn’t want to rank where this victory belonged.
“All my wins are special,” she said.
Jackson Mills of Naples won the Boys 11-12 division with rounds of 72-77. Cunningham died in 2020 and was a longtime supporter and volunteer of the South Florida PGA.
