Rivera may be closing out his last full South Florida PGA Junior Tour season, but his journey in golf is just getting started.
“When I first started playing golf I knew that I wanted to do something with golf even if it wasn’t playing professionally,” he said. “Whether it is fitting clubs, becoming a coach or running a golf course, I just knew, I at least wanted to do something with golf.”
The Miami Springs native and South Florida Junior Tour member since 2019 was recently accepted into the Florida Gulf Coast University Professional Golf Management Program, where he will attend starting in August 2022.
At the beginning of 2020, Rivera attended a college seminar with the South Florida PGA, where he was introduced to Professional Golf Management and later had the opportunity to tour and learn more about the facilities at Florida Gulf Coast University. He immediately knew it was for him.
Rivera gives a lot of credit to the SFPGA Junior Tour, where he was able to learn about the many different opportunities in golf and what a career in the industry could look like.
“Every time I play in these tournaments I get to talk with Phillip, Ellen, Cole and all the others [SFPGA Staff] and get to learn from them,'' he said. “I definitely learned a lot from them and from the Junior Tour, which I think helped me want to make golf the focus of my career.”
Rivera has been an active member of the Junior Tour since 2019 and was awarded the 2021 Ed Ficker Sportsmanship award, given to a Junior Tour member that exhibits positive sportsmanship throughout the season.
A major goal of the South Florida PGA Junior Tour is to promote a love for the game of golf, whether that is playing or simply just enjoying the game. As Junior Tour members become older it is important to understand that there are many opportunities to stay in the golf industry without having to play on tour. The game of golf and the golf industry itself has so many different opportunities and avenues to excel in.
