MIAMI (Aug. 3, 2022) – Anthony Garcia couldn’t have picked a better scenario Wednesday to end his South Florida PGA junior career.
The 18-year-old Miami resident birdied his final hole to get into a playoff and then birdied the extra hole – both par-5s -- to win the South Florida PGA Doral Junior Open on the Red Tiger Course at Trump National Doral Miami.
“I knew where I stood on the last hole, but I hit my drive into the rough and had to lay up and rely on my wedge game,” said Garcia, who will attend La Salle University this fall. “I didn’t hit a great wedge, but I made a 20-footer.”
Garcia rolled in a 15-footer on the playoff hole, the 10th, to beat Yinxuan “Kevin” Wu. Garcia shot a 2-under 70 and finished at 7-under 209 with Wu (68).
Luciana Medina of Cali, Colombia won the girls title by shooting 2-over 74, finishing at 15-over 231, five ahead of Dariana Breto (79-236) of Hialeah. The 13-year-old Medina won despite a final-hole double bogey.
“I was so nervous, I was trembling on the last hole,” Medina said. “It’s my first win in the U.S. I have to play here so people get to know me and I can play in college. It’s tough here; you have to play well to win.”
Garcia won all three of the South Florida PGA junior events he entered this year. He finished his career in style with the two clutch birdies.
“It’s nice to say I did that. But all I’m thinking about is going out and practicing some more,” Garcia said.
Gabriel Holtz of Boca Raton fired a 68 to finish a shot out of the playoff at 6-under 210. Luke Parsons (68-213) of Palm Beach Gardens was fourth.
Summer Pilot of Boca Raton (79-243) was third in the girls and Nicole Yugay (79-245) of Delray Beach was fourth.
