BOCA RATON (June 14, 2022) – Aiden Arce of Davie and Addison Klonowski of Naples emerged from talented fields Tuesday to win the South Florida Junior PGA Championship at Stonebridge Country Club.
Arce started the round with a one-shot lead and birdied four of his first seven holes to take a commanding lead. He shot a second consecutive 68 for a three-shot victory over Wylie Inman (67) of North Palm Beach.
“It feels amazing,” said Arce, a 16-year-old who will be a junior at American Heritage High School-Broward. “My good friend Luke Clanton won this tournament two years in a row (2017-’18), so I really wanted to win it. I’ve been hitting the ball well all week and today the putter got hot and everything clicked.”
The 17-year-old Klonowski shot a bogey-free 69 to finish at 6-under 138, two shots ahead of Gabriella Albert (71-140) of Delray Beach. The winner shared the first-round lead with two others.
The victories earned Arce and Klonowski, along with runner-up finishers, Inman and Albert, spots in the National Junior PGA Boys Championship and the National Junior PGA Girls Championship, respectively, Aug 2-5 at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club near Chicago.
“I’m really excited because my dad (Mark) grew up at Cog Hill and I’ll get a chance to play it like he did and see the family roots,” said Klonowski, a senior at Naples High who qualified for last year’s Girls Junior PGA Championship and made the cut.
“The first couple holes today I was trying to get into a rhythm and hit the greens. On the back nine, I started going at the pins and the putts started to fall. It’s a great feeling.”
Arce didn’t have much stress Tuesday until late in the round, and it had nothing to do with his golf.
“My phone died on the 17th hole, so I couldn’t see where I stood,” he said. “I had to ask Pavel (Tsar, a playing partner) and he told me I had a good lead.”
