Kelly Shanahan sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to take medalist honors if the Florida State Golf Tournament (Class 2A) with a two-day total of 140 and helped the American Heritage Girl's Golf Team win the team title as well.
This is the third state title for the girl's team in four years and a state-best ninth overall.
After shooting a 71 in the first round, tied with Sabree Lefebvre, Shanahan shot a 69 in the second round and won the first playoff hole.
"This means everything," Shanahan told the Sun Sentinel. "I worked my butt off for this the last five days. I came up early and did nothing but putt, play the course and put everything into it in getting ready and it paid off."
"It doesn't compare to anything I have ever done before," Shanahan added. "It is the first time I have won a tournament of this size. This is incredible."
The Patriots' Katherine Schafer, another SFPGA Junior Tour player, carded a two-day total of 151 to finish sixth as American Heritage shot 306 the second day to finish at 629 and win by 20 shots over McKeel High School.
