Team Golf: 2016 Summer Review

ATLANTIS, Fla:  This summer provided another busy season for Team Golf in south Florida.  The junior program is in its fourth year and continues to provide a fun and social atmosphere for young golfers to develop their skills at an entry tournament level.  55 total tournaments were conducted over a two month period, with nine separate leagues and close to 600 junior golfers participating during this time.

Just under 60 PGA and LPGA Professionals, at both public and private golf facilities, helped form teams and served as the team coach at their facility.  Teams are comprised of 6-12 players ages 6-14.  Teams can be coed and the tournament format is a two-person scramble, playing 6 or 9-holes of stroke play.  Leagues are separated by county and were located as far north as Indian River County, as far south as Miami-Dade County and as far west as Naples/Fort Myers.

Each league conducted 5-7 tournaments where area teams competed against each other.  Points were earned from each tournament based on team scores, and the points accumulated throughout the season.  In the end, each league crowned an overall team champion based on the season ending point totals (teams and coaches listed below):

Special thanks to host PGA and LPGA Professionals that continue to grow the game and help impact the lives of countless junior golfers.  Not only is time spent with weekly team practices and junior camps, but team coaches are also on-site to help coach team members during tournament play.  We would also like to thank the many golf facilities who have opened their doors to Team Golf and hosted the various tournaments this summer.

Finally, we would like to extend a big thank you to all the young golfers that participated this summer.  There were many familiar faces from previous years that we got to see again, and several new players that were welcomed into the program.  We enjoyed a lot of fun together and look forward to seeing you at future golf tournaments with the South Florida PGA.

Looking Ahead:  For the third consecutive year, Team Golf will offer a separate fall season in Palm Beach County, Broward County and Naples/Fort Myers.  The tournament schedule will begin in late September and conclude on November 12th.  A total of 5-6 tournaments will be offered in each league, either on Saturday or Sunday at nearby golf facilities.

About Team Golf
Team Golf, under the South Florida PGA Foundation, is a great way to get kids involved with the game of golf in a team environment.  The program is designed for kids ages 6-14 and offers a fun and social environment to tournament play through 9-hole team competition (two-person scramble format).  The basic premise is to create a team atmosphere for junior golfers, not much different than what you see in youth soccer and baseball leagues.  Similar to these sports, teams have weekly practices where golf instruction is provided by local PGA and LPGA Professionals serving as team coaches at public and private golf facilities throughout south Florida.  Leagues are separated by county, and weekly tournaments are held during the summer and fall months for area teams in each league.
