Kumar made a strong run on Sunday, finding himself 5-under-par through 16 holes before giving back four strokes on the final two holes. Herrera struggled on his opening 9 after going out in 39. The youngster managed to pull it together on the back 9 birding holes 12, 14, 16,17 and 18 to give himself a one stroke victory over Kumar. Kumar would go on to take home the boys 16-18 age division title while Pembroke Pines native Justin Lilly would take home the boys 13-15 age division.
Weston native Andrea Presilla opened up round one with a 1-over-par 73 to take the early lead in the girls division. Doral native Skylee Shin fired a 3-over-par 75 to find herself two strokes off Presilla’s lead, while Boca Raton native Taylor Caradonna fired an opening round 76. Caradonna made a Sunday charge after shooting 2-under-par on her opening 9. Coming down the back 9 on Sunday, Caradonna and Shin found themselves in a shootout for the title. Shin managed to convert a birdie on the 6th hole to pull within one of Caradonna’s lead. Shin found herself in the middle of the fairway on the 7th hole and managed to hole her fairway shot for eagle to take a one shot lead over Caradonna and eventually capture her second Championship Tour victory of 2017.
