Team Golf: 2016 Fall Review

ATLANTIS, Fla:  This weekend the South Florida PGA Foundation conducted its final Team Golf Event of the year at Weston Hills Country Club. This event featured more than 130 juniors from all across south Florida. This fall season, thirty PGA and LPGA Professionals, at both public and private golf facilities, helped form teams and served as team coaches at their facilities throughout the season.  Leagues were separated by county and were located as far north as Martin, as far south as Broward and as far west as Naples/Fort Myers. With over two hundred and fifty juniors participating on sixteen different teams this fall, more juniors had the opportunity to grow in the game, and create friendships while staying active.
From September through November, each league conducted 3-5 tournaments within their area.  Points were earned at each tournament based on team scores, and the points accumulated throughout the season.  In the end, each league crowned an overall team champion based on the season ending point totals. The final event of the fall season was the fall finale conducted at Weston Hills Country Club. Congratulations to the league champions of the fall season Stoneybrook Golf Club, Parkland Golf & Country Club and PGA National Golf Club. Team Golf, under the South Florida PGA Foundation, is a great way to get kids involved with the game of golf in a team environment.  The program is designed for kids ages 6-14 and offers a fun and social environment to tournament play through 9-hole team competition (two-person scramble format).  The basic premise is to create a team atmosphere for junior golfers, not much different than what you see in youth soccer and baseball leagues.  Similar to these sports, teams have weekly practices where golf instruction is provided by local PGA and LPGA Professionals serving as team coaches at public and private golf facilities throughout south Florida.  Leagues are separated by county and weekly tournaments are held during the summer and fall months for area teams in each league. Team Golf – Fall Championship & Season Review

ATLANTIS, Fla. – The fall season of Team Golf concluded this past weekend with the Fall Championship at Weston Hills Country Club on November 7th.  Over 100 junior golfers (ages 6-14) and 15 teams from local south Florida facilities participated on Saturday afternoon.  The winning team that took home the overall champion’s trophy came from Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club – Team Shipwreckers.  Coached by PGA Professionals Neil Lockie, Jon Arthur, Paige Golibart and Josh Miner and was represented by team members Emma Troast, Morgan Wade, Reid Korody, Sam Dulski, Talan Wilkes and Alexander Smyth.

Team Golf is held primarily during the summer months, but as the program has gained in popularity an extended fall season was created.  The Fall Championship was a culmination of a six week program that consisted of three separate leagues – Palm Beach County, Broward County, and Naples/Fort Myers.  Each league conducted five tournaments and was invited to participate in the Fall Championship to enjoy a fun day on the links.  In addition, each league crowned an overall team champion from the fall season (teams listed below):

  • Palm Beach County: Bear Lakes Country Club, Team Bear Lakes Grizzlies.  Coached by PGA Professional Chad Lauze and Adam Packard
  • Broward County: Parkland Golf & Country Club, Team Parkland Gophers.  Coached by PGA Professionals Chase Minnick and Sean Fairholm, LPGA Professional Allison Hanna
  • Naples/Fort Myers: Stoneybrook Golf Club, Team Stoneybrook Dawgs.  Coached by PGA Professionals Jordan Ball and Jeff Nixon

This is the third year for Team Golf in south Florida and over 45 different facilities, both public and private, helped form teams during the summer and fall seasons in 2015.  Each team is comprised of 8-12 players ages 6-14.  Teams can be coed and the tournament format is a two-person scramble, playing 9-holes of stroke play.  These two-person teams compete in their respective age divisions and play from age and gender specific yardages.  Facilities also conduct a weekly practice, which provides players a chance to work on fundamentals with their fellow team members and friends.  Host PGA and LPGA Professionals are the team coaches and help prepare the guidelines for each practice session.  Players get a balance of instruction, knowledge of rules and tournament play and learn about etiquette.  Overall, just under 675 junior golfers participated during the summer and fall seasons, with leagues located as far north as Indian River County, as far south as Miami-Dade County and as far west as Naples/Fort Myers.

Special thanks to host PGA and LPGA Professionals that continue to grow the game and help impact the lives of countless junior golfers.  Not only is time spent with weekly team practices and junior camps, but team coaches are also on-site to help coach team members during tournament play.  We would also like to thank the many facilities who have opened their doors to Team Golf and hosted the various tournaments.

Team Golf, Mid-Summer Review

ATLANTIS, Fla. – The summer season of Team Golf is rapidly moving along, with just three weeks remaining on the schedule.  Close to 25 tournaments will be conducted before the season ends and there is still plenty for teams and players to look forward to.

This is the third year for Team Golf in south Florida and the new schedule began on June 16th at TPC Eagle Trace.  Since then, 40 tournaments have been held in nine different leagues with roughly 600 junior golfers involved in the program.  Leagues are setup by county and 5-7 tournaments are hosted throughout the summer at nearby facilities for area teams.  Leagues are located as far north as Indian River County, as far south as Miami-Dade County, and as far west as Lee and Collier Counties.

Over 45 different facilities, both public and private, have helped form teams. Each team is comprised of players ages 6-18 (based on skill level).  Teams can be coed and the tournament format is a two-person Scramble or Best-Ball playing 9-holes of stroke play. Players get a balance of instruction, knowledge of rules and tournament play, and learn about etiquette.

Highlights this season have included fun with friends, teammates and opposing teams.  Plus, in her very first tournament ever, Lauren Miller from Team Bonaventure made a hole-in-one with the South League in Broward County.  Although the summer may be nearing the end, a fall schedule will once again be offered in certain counties for area teams.  This will begin in late September and run through early November.  All tournaments will be held on the weekends (either Saturday or Sunday).

Other highlights include the first recorded hole-in-one by Team Golf members (Dylan Atkinson from team Tiburon Tour Academy on June 17 and Reid Korody from team Jonathan’s Landing Shipwreckers on October 11).
